Crash, Bang, Wallop!

Oh.My.Gosh...........

Been abit slack getting this up, but here we go..........

Last Friday i got the super early release 4xVinyl pack of the new LP from LOGISTICS!!!!

This album is unreal. The styles, the production and the overall vibe is stunning. 'Eastern Promise' has been played out quite alot, doing exactly what his tunes do, tearing up dance floors. 'Murderation' finally gets a release too, having been rinsed out day by day since appearing on the scene around the release of the Commix Fabriclive CD, as a standout track on that.

However, the two highlights for me are the sublime 'Platinum' and 'Repitition'.

We kicked it down to Matter on friday (cheers Jon) and caught his set, easily the best of the night (sorry Jon....!) and when 'Platinum' dropped, the 2,500 people in there went mental. The drop is so unexpected that it takes abit of getting used to, so first time listeners looked abit perplexed, but trust me, it BANGS! As for 'Repitition'...... wow, i've been searching for this tune high and low for months. I heard it on a Commix live set mixed with 'Black Diamonds' of Sick Music fame, and the tracklist posted online was artist unknown. It wasn't until today that i actually realised i'd owned it for 6 days!!!!! (Doh)

Anyway, big congratulations go out to the Wookie, a great album, that i think will get huge props across the board. Looking forward to the CD release so i can get the extra tracks not on the wax version.

Ok, so this MAY look like a post about porn, but it's really not.

'TittyShaker' is a term used by many when referring to a certain type of tune........ an old school gem, often found on a hazy sunday afternoon while digging for records in some Angel backstreet or second hand waste store. These 45's, often based around the soul, funk and rockabilly genres have been tearing up the dance since the early 40's.

'Titty Shakin' itself has been a craze for over 50 years, since the implimenting of cage dancing in soul/funk clubs during 1964. Mini skirts and 'Go Go Heels' took off on such a mainstream level that artists from the Beatles to Otis Reading performed aside 'Go Go Shakers' on live TV shows.
Those like me, who grew up with the Naaaaaani Shakers onstage at Drum raves around 2000-02 would have had NO stamina crew without the pioneers of 'Shakin' culture.

Obviously, around the 60's, the 'shake' scene began to get more sexed up and lost some of its original charm. I don't want to front like this is the most p.c thing to write about, but it did begin as something not based around leering at women in a cage.....!

Anyway, that said, please go to the site, hit the jukebox section and listen to some of the examples of the sounds that started one of the most delightfully insane crazes to hit the globe!

Speech!!!!!

Super mad congratulations to Speech Debelle, repping South London, for claiming the Mercury Music Prize. When she says 'Thanks to my label, because they should have run a mile when i said i wanted to do a Hip Hop version of a Tracy Chapman album', she hits the nail on the head for me.

I'm not that familiar with most of her tunes, but i wanted to post more about her label, Big Dada, than anything else.

Since i was a yoot finding my feet with independent labels and new genres of music, Ninja Tune Records, and its sister label dedicated to Hip Hop, Big Dada Recordings showed me a vital path. For years they have been pressing and promoting quality British music, mixed of course with some epic U.S and Euro stuff.

Diplo, TTC, Roots Manuva and Wiley are just a few names now synonomous with 'urban' music who have released albums with this label, choosing it over majors due to the teams that run it, and the belief they have in their art.

Again, large up to Speech, but HUGE ups to BIG DADA!!!!!!!!!!

FINALLY getting some much deserved mainstream respect.

Exit 016: Spectrasoul 'MELODIES'

FINALLY i got my hands on a copy of this, (as did Winnie......!)

Having been bumping the crap low quality mp3 for weeks and weeks, i can now hear the full weight of this record. And jesus, it really doesn't fail......

Anyone who's been near S.Click HQ will have been subject to the caning of this recently and i have to bring it to the attention of any who may have missed it. While i've got to accept the vocal warping and slow roll on it won't appeal to everyone, those who get it, really get it. Spectrasoul emerged a few years ago as a very interesting pair of producers and since having numerous tunes put out by some of the scenes most respected labels, they have gone from strength to strength. Alongside Instra:mental, dBridge and the Exit/NonPlus records camp, they have fast become synonymous with downtempo, bass ridden, forward thinking d&b. Using the vocals of rising US singer Mike Knight to the fullest degree, blended with some deep tech pinches and slamming drums, this is tearing up both Drum raves and Dubstep parties alike.

The flipside brings us Insignia, a great tune in it's own right. Most B sides would disapper behind this anthem, but it somehow holds it's own. I think the intro sounds alot like a late 90's jungle tune, with light vocal snippets and swirling chords, but their trademark lowkey tempo takes it somewhere delightfully unexpected on the drop. The key to this tune has to be the bass though, as it grinds you along like a Ray Keith stomper played at half speed.

Dope work, dope producers and what can i say, Exit Records has released another amazing tune. At only their 16th release, i cannot wait for some more Lp's. The future is looking good.

When i was around 18/19, me a Pheb discovered the Fathom graphic novels and thought they were pretty heavy. Since then, i've always kept an eye out for future developments and releases. It's probably old news, but i just found out everybody's favourite tattooed starlet is set to play the underwater heroin.
